Characters in Game (previously too): n/a

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Asmodai (occasionally 'Demon Lord Asmodai,' or other variations)
Canon: Future Card Buddyfight
Gender: M
Age: Unknown; it's suggested that he's immortal, and he mentions he's been 'around for a while', so I'm going with 'at least a few centuries, probably more like a couple millennia'.
Suitability: n/a
Species: Demon
Genitalia: He has a fairly standard human-male style penis, larger than average (because he is eight feet tall, give or take) and unnatural pink to match the rest of him, but not otherwise terribly exciting. Once he has his magic back, though-- or starts learning magic from people in the setting-- I imagine he can do whatever the hell he wants with his junk (partially because it would be hilarious and he is kind of a troll).

Canon Point: As recent in canon as possible (episode 40-ish).

History: There is basically no information about Asmodai's history in the show, or in what supplemental materials I can find, and not much is known about Magic World as a place-- it's never seen in the show, let alone explored to any degree-- so drawing conclusions from it is rather difficult. But I will try!

What is definitely canon:

Asmodai is from Magic World, one of several different alternate universes/dimensions inhabited by monsters in the Buddyfight canon, and is part of the group of monsters called 72 Pillars (very loosely based on the demons listed in The Lesser Key of Solomon). At some point in his life, he went to Danger World and trained there, learning how to use a hammer as a weapon, and also cover his entire person in spikes.

He is also good friends with a demon lord from Dungeon World, implying that either he's spent time there or Gagnar dimension-hopped over to Magic world.

He buddy partnered with Tetsuya Kurodake, a pre-teen/teenaged boy, within the year or so before the beginning of canon, after being attracted by his amazing dance skills, or possibly their seeming hypnotic properties, or possibly some other, unknown quality of Tetsuya's. He gained notoriety as a TV personality sometime around then, which he has maintained throughout the series: we see him performing a morning exercise/dance show in the episode he's introduced; when he first appears at Tetsuya's school as his buddy monster, at least a good chunk of the audience knows who he is (and the announcer says they 'all' know him from TV); he implies he has a manager (by telling Tetsuya that it's a good thing Tets isn't them).

During his time as Tetsuya's buddy monster, Asmodai continued his dance and music career, as well as accompanying Tetsuya to the boy's dance and rap competitions and generally goofing around with Tetsuya. He also gets the kid to start playing Buddyfight, letting him make mistakes but being very supportive and very knowledgeable about the game and always encouraging him to get better, whether he wins or loses. He's also always along for the ride when Tets is hanging out with the core group of friends in the show (main character Gao and his buddy monster Drum Bunker Dragon, his deck-builder Baku, and his analyst Kuguru), offering some pretty sharp commentary and keeping an eye on them all. Not that he's super good at being The Adult; when he is piloting a double-blimp sky mansion for them (#thingsthatactuallyhappen), he's the one who presses the button that ejects one of the two balloons keeping them in the sky after laughing about how he has no idea how to land the thing. Asmodai, no.

Other buddy monsters have displayed surprise to learn that a powerful monster like Asmodai isn't paired up with a more powerful human; he seems to have some notoriety as a pretty badass dude, though he's far from the most powerful demon in the 72 Pillars group of demons, going by his card's stats.

In general, he has been around for a lot of the show, though usually as a bystander, spectator, and commentator. He tends to sit next to Tetsuya in the stands at the school's buddyfight arena, or hang out at the characters' favorite card shop watching them, or go to Gao's house and hang out with the friend circle (which is a pretty big circle), or help fly a chunk of the group in a blimp into the mountains; he's been there for a lot of the major matches, and he has taught Tetsuya enough to get him into the semi-finals for Tets' school's Buddyfight tournament (where he does lose, but did generally well for himself). He is certainly in the loop for most plot developments, and has shown himself to be willing to eavesdrop to get onto loops he wasn't supposed to be in on.

What seems to be canon, maybe:

All good characters have a goal they're working towards, that drives their behavior and explains why they do the things they do. As far as I can tell, Asmodai's is training Tetsuya up to be the most powerful buddyfighter he can be, and then... something? ???

There's a long game going on there, and Asmodai is pretty closed-mouthed about it, but it's there I freaking swear.

He calls Tets "the future king of the Magic World", and encourages him to 'enchant people with his dance', which may be an entirely literal enchantment ("has the ability to influence others to dance along with his light rhythms"). Tetsuya seems to be the awful rap version of the Music Meister, and has no idea-- but Asmodai clearly does, and just as clearly thinks there's something worth bolstering there.

He also does things like... in his first appearance, he agrees to fight the main character of the show, as long as Gao puts his most powerful card on the line. He claims it's because it's entertaining for the audience, but that doesn't add up-- the only people who are known to know about the wager is the fairly small group of kids attending the same class as Gao.

My current guesses are that he either just really digs Tets' style and wants to help him be the absolute best he can be, because Power of Friendship-- up to and including possibly becoming the ruler of an entire World of monsters-- or that Asmodai wanted someone with unusual potential to help him take over Magic World, and Tetsuya suited him in temperament and talents and general adorableness. Or some unknown third option?

Whatever it is that drives Asmodai, he doesn't seem to think it's super urgent; he's moving towards it, and pushing Tetsuya forward with him, but not pushing so hard his Tets will stumble, and not moving so fast that it's been revealed within the first 45 episodes of the show. This synchs up pretty well with his general laid-back personality, which I will talk more about in a moment.

Personality:

Man, Asmodai is, like, way laid back. He is a ray of sunshine, all the time, and is nothing but smiles and laughter and being mega-relaxed about things that maybe most people are not relaxed about. It's not that he doesn't care--he's downright enthusiastic about dancing and rapping and hanging out with people, and a cheery, helpful teacher to his Tets-- but pretty much the only time he's ever shown to be deeply affronted by anything is when he sees someone straight-up cheating at Buddyfight. Not even a girl threatening Tetsuya with a knife takes the smile off his face! He does have his more serious moments, but they're fleeting and hidden between layers and layers of teasing and laughter and dorking around yelling 'yo' all the time.

This doesn't make him thoughtless or an idiot. He shows, over and over again, that he's got a brain under that hoodie, and he uses it; he's always one of the first people to catch on to weird twists and schemes that are happening, sharp-eyed and sharp-eared and knowledgeable, and (as mentioned in his history) he's outright eavesdropped to get into the loop on things. He also shows a lot of wisdom in how he handles Tetsuya, constantly encouraging him and reframing failure as learning opportunities.

He takes this same teasing-but-helpful-or-friendly tack with most of the characters he interacts with (including aforementioned stabby chick), though this might partially be because most of the people he knows are teenagers or younger. When he's face-to-face with hot monster ladies, he does switch tracks to "hello, pretty woman, i am highly attracted to your appearance" (except with more 'yo' and such), but in that instance he wasn't really... conversing? Or at least didn't get them to talk to him in return. He would probably flip back to teasingly friendly (and just somewhat flirty) if he was actually able to strike up a dialogue with someone he was attracted to.

Asmodai is also completely comfortable with his body and ridiculously confident in himself, constantly refusing to sit like a normal person and happy to dance and rap in public, for no reason besides that he wants to (or Tets wants to). His biggest source of (comedically exaggerated) distress is when he thinks he is going to be perceived as uncool or lame due to the actions of others.

Abilities/Weaknesses:
OH BOY DOES ASMODAI HAVE ABILITIES.

To start off, let's talk about generic Buddy Monster abilities:

- In canon, all buddy monsters have some level of transformative power over themselves, at least while in the Human World. Characters like Drum Bunker Dragon and Quinus Axia used this to take small and unthreatening forms, El Quixote and his mount become an old man and a dog, etc. Since Asmodai is a celebrity in-universe, we never see him using this skill in the same way as the other buddy monsters (that is, to make himself smaller and cuter/more normal), since he isn't going to scare anyone (despite being eight goddamn feet tall), but but it can be reasonably assumed this is a power he would have. However, we do see both him and Drum change clothing, apparently by magic, to suit their training that they went through in other worlds besides their home ones; Asmodai has also spontaneously magically cosplayed and rescaled his body to a larger size so he can suplex a dragon.

- All the buddy monsters also are able to give their human buddies a buddy skill, which is usually a shining bit of magic that somehow lets them fly. Asmodai's buddy skill allows his buddy Tetsuya to fly around on a giant banana, which Tets rides like a skateboard because of course he does. Asmodai can also fly, though he doesn't seem to do it very often (and it might be tied to Tets using the buddy skill at the same time, since other monsters that aren't natural flyers only seem to fly when their partner's buddy skills are activated).

- Drum Bunker Dragon mentions that humans have really bad hearing; I'm not sure if this means that all monsters have better hearing than humans, or just Drum, but Asmodai has certainly never needed to have anything repeated or clarified for him. This may just be because he's a bit sharper than the main character, though.

- Buddy monsters in general don't seem to have much trouble universe/dimension hopping. This is especially true for hopping between their home world and the human world, but even ridiculous straight-up warrior types can get from their world to other monster worlds with little difficulty.

- Related to those things, buddy monsters can turn themselves back into cards and insert themselves back into their buddy's deck? Yeah that's a thing. I have no idea if this counts as part of their transformative abilities, their Buddyfight abilities, or their dimension-hopping abilities. They do still seem to be at least slightly conscious of events occurring outside their cards, though...

Asmodai-specific powers:

- TELEPORTING IN GODDAMN PILLARS OF FLAME. I am not even remotely kidding jesus christ dude you are way op.

- Cloning himself; he can, apparently at will, split off one or two magical clones of himself, for backup, or to cosplay around him.

- Dangerous Back-drop is his special move when he is being used as a monster in a Buddyfight match! If his fighter discards one card from their hand, he can suplex any monster on the field and send it to the drop zone (discard pile). However, card abilities explicitly cannot be used outside of matches in canon, because reasons.

Further prose sample:

When he read the contract on the desk, Asmodai laughed, tossed it back down, and reached out to feel for his real contract, his buddy contract. It was a cute prank; while he wasn't real real fond of the bit where he was missing time, didn't know how he'd ended up in this place or where this place was, he liked the touch of absurdity. Teach a demon lord magic! Might as well teach a cat to meow, right?

Chuckling to himself, he grabbed his magic and asked it to take him to Tetsuya, eyes closing against the imminent pillar of flame, waiting for the wash of pleasant warmth and the faint popping of pressure change in his ears.

Neither happened.

He cracked an eye open, grin fading to a lopsided smile. Now, that wasn't right, yo, magic was supposed to do as he told it. Was something blocking him? Or maybe it was too far to go without a little more force. This place looked like Dungeon World, if it were anyplace he'd ever been; maybe he should try hopping over to Human World and trying again.

-

Five minutes later, Asmodai's smile had flattened out into a rather confused expression. It didn't feel like anything was wrong, but clearly something was up, and it wasn't a pleasant thing, either. His magic was there, he could feel it, feel it as clear and normal as he could feel the sandals on his feet or the earrings in his ears, but he couldn't get it to do anything.

"Dang," he said to himself, and punctuated it with a "yo," and stepped out into the castle, ducking a little under the doorframe-- he couldn't even get himself smaller, what was up with this place?-- and started looking for a way out, or at least a dude he could ask what the heck was going on.
